Arena Homme+ April 2019 Interview - Seventeen MINGYU, JUN, DK, VERNON

 

 

Q: This seems like an unusual combination. 

MINGYU: This is the first time we four got in the same car together. (laughs) We usually ride according to units or by hairshop*, so there were no chances to share a ride.

JUN: Now that we’re together, how about we make up a new unit? In fact, the three of us, except Vernon, sang a bright song ‘Hello’, it’ll be nice to sing a cool song with Vernon.

DK: Then I’ll rap this time. (laughs)

 

Q: First of all, congratulations on your 10 wins (for Home).

DK: We heard about the news of winning first place while we were in the plane, we also found out about the news while we were resting at the dorm. There was an overwhelming feeling of love, but it gave us the energy to move forward again.

JUN: Overtime there was a pre-recording, the fans have to spend a long time on standby just to see us. And the naffs worked really hard to win more awards. All the honour really goes to the fans. 

 

Q: The group is in a stable position now, so each of you must be preparing something on your own.

DK: In June, I will be playing in the musical XCalibur. (MINGYU: You can look forward to it. It’s really cool.)

VERNON: Whenever there’s time I just keep on working on music.

MINGYU: I want to do more photoshoots. I want to show different images/colours. (Q: While in the middle of the shoot, he was taking polaroids) It (taking photos) is my hobby, but I also like being photographed.

JUN: I’ve been doing individual schedules in China. Rather than resting at home, I want to do one more schedule. We all feel the same way. I also want to try acting. I was a child actor in China before, so I’m curious as to how I’ll be now that I’ve grown up.

Q: When there are 13 people gathered together, there may be differing feelings. ( t/n: different personalities, opinions)

VERNON: That’s me and Seungkwan. He’s the only other same-aged as me but we’re totally opposites. But he’s still the one I’m closest to. There’s this song called “ 반대가 끌리는 이유

(The Reason Why Opposites Attract)”*

MINGYU: I don’t think it’s common to find people who has the same personality as mine. Even if I don’t want to eat ramyun, if someone says they want to eat, I’ll go boil it for them. If I see someone cleaning, I immediately go and help, then I end up doing it all alone. Wonwoo-hyung and Woozi-hyung were amazed and told me “You’re really amazing”. 

 

Q: On the contrary, there may be something that binds up all 13 of you. 

VERNON: We all like to joke around/play with each other. Before, we’ll joke around then end up fighting. (laughs) But now everyone knows it’s a joke, so well just enjoy it.

Q: You’ve done a lot of tours abroad. Having been to many places, there must be travel destinations to recommend to the fans.

VERNON: Toronto, Canada. We had rest day after the concert, so I went for a walk with the members. Under the clear sky, it was a completely different mood/ambience from our country. I don’t think I’ll forget that memory for a long time.

MINGYU: Chile. The chilly air was good, and the hotel we stayed at was surrounded by mountains. Before our morning schedule, I watched the sun rising over the mountains from the hotel rooftop, it was really moving.

JUN: What impressed me is different. Texas left a memory on me. We went to an amusement park where there weren’t many people. I was impressed that I rode a very scary ride. 

DK: Los Angeles, where we filed the music video for 울고 싶지 않아(Don't Wanna Cry) for two weeks. When another member is filming, I could go play around. Overtime I hear 울고 싶지 않아(Don't Wanna Cry), it reminds me of the memories I had with the members.

 

Q: Spring has finally arrived. As winter passes and it becomes spring, does it feel exciting?

MINGYU: First of all, my birthday is in spring. (laughs) It feels like the year only begins when the weather clears.

DK: For the new year, we decided to start exercising, but I’m struggling these days. (Q: Is there a chance to see it?) I can’t show it, but if I work hard enough, maybe I can. (laughs)

JUN: Actually, I’ve never felt the seasons change as much before coming to Korea. I first experienced the below-zero weather in Korea. Where I grew up, there’s a small festival held in spring. My mom used to buy flowers at the festival and display them on the table. So when spring comes, thats the memory that comes to mind.
