    Set It Off

Q: SEVENTEEN has changed. The mature and restrained performance is outstanding.

MINGYU: Until now, SEVENTEEN's albums are a record of who we are at that time and in that present moment. We didn't decide to show change at this point, but as time went by, the story inside the album has also matured. Now, SEVENTEEN is in an important/critical time. The title song, '독: Fear' , captures the fears we felt.

Q: Contrary to the feeling of fear, SEVENTEEN has sold 700,000 copies of the album within the first week of release. It is also the second most popular k-pop album released this year. What is your next goal?

MINGYU: When we receive questions about what our goal is, we always come to the answer that -- there isn't one. We (just) continue to do our best as we go up one step at a time at the staircase¹ right in front of our eyes. Nonetheless, I was really surprised to hear about the sales of this album. It felt like we skipped two or three steps in one go? Still, there are many steps left. We have to work harder to climb up. (laughs)

Q: For SEVENTEEN who has challenged a variety of genres, is there a genre that you want to do?

MINGYU: Although an energetic performance is nice, I wonder how a stage, decorated with a more artistic style/mood would be like.

Q: The theme of your 3rd album is 'poetry'. The various figurative language and metaphors are quite impressive.

MINGYU: The definition of  'poetry' that we gave was a message that we wanted to convey to someone. It was rather fun to write down what I wanted to say to the people who support us. Later on, I had a hard time choosing the words because I had a lot that I wanted to say.

Q: The album is figuratively likened to SEVENTEEN's 'growing pains'². Comparing your debut and the present, what has changed the most?

MINGYU: We  thought about how the influence of our words affect the people who like and support us. It makes us think of how much weight our words have. Of course, we want to be more of a good influence. I want to be wiser.

Q: MINGYU participating in the writing of 'Snap Shoot' s lyrics is impressive. Are there members who like taking photos?

THE8: Mingyu and I  both like it. We've been into film cameras these days— Mingyu often takes photos of members and people/ characters (portraits), while I concentrate on landscapes and objects. My memory isn't that good, so I feel like I get to hold on to a moment I want to remember through my camera. I want to share beautiful and happy moments that I felt with the fans.

MINGYU: I carry around both digital and film cameras. In the case of film cameras, it often takes a few weeks or a month or two to develop. I like the process of bringing the film to the photo developing lab and being sleepless 'til the next day because I'm so curious (of how the photos will come out). It's really fun!

Q: I wonder what your respective  'Happy Ending's are.

THE8: In the future, the moment when I'm living in a house by the beach together with my dog and the person I love!

MINGYU: I'm gonna build a house next to The8's. Even if it takes 5 or 10 years, I want to build it myself. Then someday ,THE8 will tell me it's hard and question me why I did it myself. It's more meaningful, that's why. (laughs)

HOSHI: I just thought of mine. I want to be Mingyu and The8's landlord. (laughs)

Q: The team that's gathered here right now (for the interview) is the 'hyung line'. Do you have any good points in being a hyung?

MINGYU: I sometimes feel like I'm like the younger. The older hyungs aren't seen like they are older, the younger ones are also not viewed as younger. Like with a real family.

    Interview Notes:

1 -  Staircase - metaphor for their career, as if saying they reach higher or lower 'levels'/goals every step up or step down

2 - Growing Pains - pain felt by kids in the knees/legs which most associate to their 'bones getting longer' hence 'growing',  metaphorically used to call the pain/hurt you feel while growing up/maturing/going through something.
